The nursing program here at WWT gives students a chance at pursuing a future in health care. Sean Newson’17 took the nursing assistant class last year and now is a certified nurse assistant. Sean explains why he took the nursing assistant class, “I just wanted to try it out because I had my mind set on firefighting for a long time but then i decided to not limit myself to just one career option so i thought i would try it”. Warren Woods Tower offers many programs to help with future career choices.
“I’ve always had a passion for helping people in any way I can so I plan on pursuing a career in health care. On a long term basis i have the goal of graduating nursing school to become a travel Registered Nurse,” Newson shares.
Sean currently works as a certified nurse assistant. WWT nursing class offers a selected few a chance to get certified in nursing assistant. Those students have to participate in clinicals at a nursing home, and then once finished, have the choice to take a test and perform a designated skill in order to be certified. “I performed three skills including full body range of motion, feeding a paralyzed patient, and female perineal care,” Sean says about the most challenging part of the whole exam. “At first it’s nerve racking because you have to wait in a room until you’re called in to begin and one by one you see people leave out not knowing if they passed or failed so it’s intimidating ,” Newson states regarding the moments right before he found out he passed.
The students who worked towards becoming a CNA (certified nurse assistant) had dedicated many hours towards their certification and Sean shares his special moment right after he passed, “It was a huge relief knowing that all of my hard work didn’t go to waste i was very excited, i can remember going into the bathroom and actually jumping up and down about it, i was happy.”
Sean did not let his certificate go to waste, “I am now currently working as a CNA, though it did take a while because most places won’t hire until you’re 18, even if you are certified, so it took almost 5 months but i meet someone who was willing to give me a chance and i love what i do and they love me too.” At any job, struggles may appear. However, Sean shares he has had no struggles yet, “There haven’t really been any difficulties, you just have to be on top of your job. There is no messing around, you have to be good at your job or you won’t last. At my current job even in the couple of months I’ve been there i’ve already seen multiple people come and go because they weren’t on top of what they needed to be doing. It’s a difficult field and not for everybody but if you decide to get into it you have to be dedicated to doing it right and with a lot of effort.”
Healthcare will always be in demand. The number of male nurses have tripled since 1970. When hearing this Sean says, “I’m glad to know that this field of work is expanding and not practiced at a limit, it’s good to feel appreciated more for the work that I do and ultimately I think it will work out for the best, males make some of the best nurses.”
WWT offers students a great start to their future, the only thing students need is passion and motivation.
