Way on the other side of the school, where most students don’t travel on a daily basis, is the center of the music department. Unless you are involved in the music department at Tower, most don’t hear much about what goes on within it. Well, for choir students, it involves a lot of preparation and dedication.
After months of learning that “do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do” are not just Mary Poppins lyrics and diligently working to perfect their chosen pieces of music, the choir got to put their skills to the test. Under the direction of Mrs. Burkett, the choir has spent the entire year building a foundation of basic musical skills that lead them to success this past Tuesday, March 13th.
MSVMA (Michigan School Vocal Music Association) is an organization where choirs from all over come to be judged under to scrutiny of professional judges. The choir performed two very different pieces entitled “The Tide Rises”, a more serious song, and “Let the Music Dance”, which has a lighter feel to it, accompanied by Ron Pietrantoni. As nerve-wracking as this may seem, the experience does not just include a performance on a huge stage.
Members of the choir must also prove that they are skilled at sight reading, meaning that they must read a piece of music they have never seen before, paying special attention to not only notes and intervals, but rhythm as well. The work put into preparing for such a feat paid off, and the choir came home with a perfect score in sight reading. This, along with their performance score, would allow the choir to receive an overall score of “1”, the highest you can get.
Though the choir is breathing a sigh of relief right now, and enjoying their recent success, the work is not yet over. Choirs who receive a “1” at MSVMA go on to perform at a higher level, State Festival. Keep posted to Titan Nation come May to see how our Choir performs!
