It is undeniable that senior year is much anticipated throughout everyone’s high school career. The title of “senior” comes along with many favorable connotations. Seniors are thought to run the school. They’re the oldest, the most accustomed to the school, and seem to have a handle on the goings on at Tower.
For athletes, it doesn’t just end there, though. Senior year is their last opportunity to go through the everyday motions of being on a team. It’s their last chance to have a great season, and their last chance to have the overall experience of being one of the crew. Therefore, it isn’t hard to see why senior year is the most anticipated out of all four years of high school.
However, not every senior athlete has gotten to share in the revelry of their senior season. John Drabik ’12 has been wrestling with Tower’s team since he was a freshman, along with playing football and running track. As to be expected, John was much looking forward to his senior year, until an injury obtained during football season halted his progress. “It has definitely been a down point of my year,” John said. “I was excited to have a successful year, but the injury has kept me from walking onto the mat.”
John’s injury was nothing he could brush off easily. He suffered from a labral tear in his left hip, preventing him from participating in any sporting events or practices. “I’m not really able to do anything, “John explains.
Nevertheless, this unfortunate turn of events has not kept John from supporting his team, and attending just about every practice and meet. Though he cannot participate, it is important that he goes to give support, as each and every member is an essential part of the team.
Even though John’s absence is surely not doing the team any favors, they do their best to pick up the slack. “Missing a body from the room certainly doesn’t help the team,” John explains, “but I am proud of my team for being able to make up for my injuries and unfortunate situations to still be tough and competitive.”
With an attitude like that, it is not hard to see why John is an important part of the WWT wrestling team. However, the fact that the team is not reliant solely on one person may just be the reason behind their success. The team has improved immensely since last season, refusing to let even injures hold them back. Cheer on the boys as they continue to improve!
