In the ever present effort to keep Tower up to date and keep students happy, most of you have probably noticed the new amenity available: wi-fi. The newly added wireless internet has had students buzzing about what they think of their latest privilege.

In the age of smart phones with 3G and 4G networks, many students are wondering aloud if having wi-fi is really worth it. Personally, I think it is.

Though, yes, many people have access to the internet at any time through their phone, the fact of the matter is that not everyone does. Some people rely on just their iPod touch to be their access to the world of wireless internet. Even those who do have internet access through their phone may have a limited data plan, meaning they can only use the internet so much, or they’ll face paying more. Or even worse, angry parents. So why not take advantage of the free internet we now have access to at lunch?

This leads to a whole other argument of “Why is it only available in the cafeteria?” Well, by now everyone is familiar with the rule put in place this year that has banned iPods from use with the exception of passing periods, and lunch. Whether you agree with it or not, it is a rule nonetheless. So really, the only time students could make use of the wi-fi during school hours is at lunch.

This said, though not everyone is thrilled with the addition of the wi-fi or may not see the point, there really is no drawback to having it. It certainly isn’t hurting anyone, and though you may not personally be benefitting from it, rest assured that others are taking advantage of it.

Sure, there are things that students don’t agree with such as tardy sweeps, or having to wear IDs, but personally, I see the addition of wi-fi to be a step towards compromise to keep both the students and the staff happy.
