February 14th is a day we all know as Valentine’s Day; the day to tell your loved ones just how much they mean to you with flowers, chocolates, and cute little heart candies with messages. But honestly, what this holiday is all about now is how much companies can get out of your wallets. Valentine’s Day has become nothing but a high maintenance hallmark holiday.
We don’t need a specific day to express feelings toward a partner. It’s a nice gesture to spend the day telling your significant other how much you love and care about them, but isn’t that something people should be doing daily? Many people in relationships are constantly being taken for granted and deserve more than one day of the year to feel special. Sure, buying gifts for that special someone on February 14th will give them a big smile, but buying them one on any other random day of the year would give them an even bigger smile. It would show them you’re thinking about them every day, not just on a special day.
As soon as Valentine’s season comes around, candy and flower companies jump for joy because that is when they’re able to raise their prices to pretty unreasonable amounts. The companies take great satisfaction in the fact that many people are so committed in their relationships with their partners who may expect gifts on this oh-so special day. Because you know, what better way to show someone you love them by buying some overpriced flowers that will die in a few weeks? Or even better, some expensive chocolate that could cause them a stomachache!
Finally, the thing about this holiday that is the most annoying is the fact that it’s so predictable. It doesn’t take that much thought to plan a romantic evening on this “special day”. The date expectation is to be taken to the most expensive restaurant that can be found in your town; then to have a bouquet of flowers delivered to your partner. Also, you can’t forget that everyone always expects to receive the most expensive gift possible. This day is way too planned and has so many expectations, rather than if you were to do these things randomly, which would be way more special.
This day isn’t really about love anymore, but more about the day of the year sales of red roses, boxes of chocolates, and sappy love cards. If you really want to make someone feel special, you wouldn’t dedicate one day to showing him or her how much you care, you would do it every day. Now, Valentine’s Day is just a hallmark holiday; it’s only about the money.
