Every year, people wait in excitement for the new TV shows that are introduced to stations. Sadly, most come and go but 2016 shows promise with its television lineup. One of the new shows is ‘This Is Us’ on NBC, a show that circles around twins Kevin and Kate along with their adopted brother Randall, and what’s going on in their past and present lives. The show also focuses on their parents, the three reminiscing on memories they had with them and those memories usually tie in with the story line. Randall is also searching for his biological father, and spending as much time with him as he can. Every episode is a new story that ties in with the current plot, and will never fail to make you laugh or cry. Upon seeing other new shows, none compares to the excitement I feel when a new episode of ‘This Is Us’ comes on. That’s why I believe this show is the best one to come out of the fall season.
I believe out of all the other shows that come and go, ‘This Is Us’ is and will be timeless. You will always be able to relate to the story, the issues that each character face. These issues may become less important one day, but they will never go away sadly. A show that points out these issues, helps the audience think “I can relate to that,” and shows that we aren’t alone while dealing with that issue. You will also find being able to relate to moments that aren’t controversial, such as the love between the parents, Kate’s insecurities, Randall’s ability to hold the family and everyone around him together. This show has something for everyone.
Many found they could relate to the story introduced, and the emotion it brings makes it memorable. “I felt the story behind the family sparked a lot of emotions from the audience. ‘This Is Us’ has a different story line that connects to those who follow along in a way no other show has before,” Marissa Rankin ‘18 says. Once the pilot revealed the young couple featured in the previews is actually Kevin, Kate, and Randall’s parents, you couldn’t stop watching. That includes the fact that each character finds themselves in a situation many people face today such as obesity, racial issues, adoption, cancer, and many more.
‘This Is Us’ has a story line and plot unlike any show I’ve seen before, setting it apart from the others. “The show does a good job looking at the aspect of the characters growing up and unraveling more parts to their story each episode,” Marissa says. The show time travels from current day to late 70’s/early 80’s when Kate, Kevin, and Randall were growing up, and the set and familiarity makes it believable. For that short time, you feel like you’re there with the family. When they return to current day, the same rules apply. Mandy Moore who plays the mom (Rebecca) is sporting a wig and actually looking like an aged woman to fit the time they’re in. You don’t question the constant change, because it all makes sense and ties in together at the end.
Although I cannot reveal much about the show without revealing the current plot, I can tell you that ‘This Is Us’ is a show worth watching. It’s rare to see a show that makes you laugh and cry, and in my opinion it’s the perfect combination. You can now watch the full first season on NBC or Hulu, episodes return to NBC on January 10th.
