HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is one of the biggest student clubs, not only in our school, but also throughout the nation! HOSA promotes healthcare career opportunities and provides information to students about the healthcare industry.
Taylor Sanders, a senior here at WWT, is the president of 6th hour Medical Assistants class. “I joined HOSA to not only get involved but get students who are interested in the same things together to go out and impact our school and community,” she shares. “Ever since i was little i loved playing doctor with my baby dolls. I would hook them up with tapes and strings and act like they had ivs. I want to become a Pediatrics Physician’s Assistant, i wanna work either in ER or the NICU,” Sanders explains about her long term career goal and how long she has known she wanted to work in the healthcare field. “HOSA has really helped open things up to the possibilities out there, regarding professions, there is so many and nobody is there to hold you back. HOSA gives you an opportunity to explore healthcare options”.
There are very few people who can deal and actually like being in healthcare. Blood, surgeries, trauma, they all scare people. Taylor shares why she’s cut out for healthcare, “I love helping people and being able to save someone’s life or help them feel better makes me feel so good. It’s such an amazing thing to do, it’s rewarding and you meet so many inspirational people”.
HOSA members participate in a lot of volunteer work. “So far this year we have went down to the VA hospital and built gingerbread houses with the veterans. We raised money for HIV and cancer and gathered hats and gloves for homeless veterans,” and it’s only been a couple of months since HOSA has been started up again for the new school year!
If you have any charity ideas or volunteer work you think HOSA should be apart of, don’t be afraid to talk to Taylor Sanders and any other HOSA member. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated! HOSA is all about helping out!
