The Warren Woods Tower Marching band just finished their season of marching with a 120 piece band, earning all ones, at the MSBOA marching band festival. Now Mr. Corpuz, the new band director is turning his attention to a new type of band. Well, next year, things may be getting a little jazzy. Corpuz has plans to start up a jazz band class. That’s right! There will be a Jazz Band class here at Tower.
If you know how to play an instrument, feel free to sign up. Corpuz needs all the interest we can get! The class will be much more different than the normal band class since jazz is more of a free, improvising-type genre of music.
Though it is a plan for next year, it’s still only an idea. The main concern is gaining interest. Corpuz needs people interested for the idea to fly; no interest, no jazz band. There are no problems as long as you know how to play an instrument. There may even be a chance for some vocalists to shine! “I plan to use some vocalists for some arrangements,” Corpuz says.
The hour of the class is still to be determined. Most of the information is still being proposed to the administration. “This class will replace a class, however it will not replace band or choir,” Corpuz added.
The counselors are also on board with the idea. “I think it would be a great idea. Tower has a long history with band. We’ve had jazz band in the past and it would be great to have it again,” Mr. McCracken said. It is a great idea, as long as it fits in the schedule. “The idea would have to be board approved. Then, we would have to have enough students interested in the class for it to work,” Mrs. Geyman added.
You don’t have to have played jazz before to join! A lot of the band students at Tower haven’t played jazz before. “I’ve never played jazz before, but I’m willing to go for it”, Stoan Harris ‘14 said. People in the community, especially the students enjoy jazz. “I think jazz sounds pretty cool. It’s a change from what I usually hear,” Andrew Cicchelli ’15 added.
There are some students interested in the class, that’s a start. However, enough people need to be interested for the class to happen. “It would be great for the school and for the community,” Mr. McCracken said. If you’re interested, please sign up or talk to Mr. Corpuz. The more, the merrier.
