Although it seems as if winter sports have just begun, some spring sports are getting a head start in their season. The girl’s tennis team had their first pre-season meeting in the back of the library on January 6. Practice isn’t slated to begin until Monday March 12th, but Coach Cutshaw is already looking forward to seeing what new talent will join the tennis team.

“Last year was kind of difficult for the varsity team because we lost seven seniors. That was exactly half of our team. It means the rest of us really have to step up,” Kelsey Avey ’13, a returning varsity player, said. To add insult to injury, the seven graduating seniors were also the top seven on varsity, from first doubles to half of the second doubles team.

Rebuilding the team this year is going to be a challenge, but there are many fresh faces to help the process along. Coach Cutshaw is also hoping that more girls show interest.

A total of 51 girls appeared at the first meeting, which is an impressive number in of itself, but late additions are still being accepted until the end of the first week of practice. “That many girls is crazy and massive! But that means there is a lot of opportunity for talent,” Kelsey added.

This year is sure to be an exciting one with Coach Cutshaw already planning ahead. “I’m looking into getting courts at Wimbledon Racquet Club very soon. Although the weather isn’t conducive to outdoor practice right now, if the price is right, we can use indoor courts possibly as soon as February,” he said. Other events that are being planned are possible excursions to the University of Michigan to watch their tennis players.

“I’m excited to begin tennis and see how I rank with the other girls,” Andrea Catalano ’12, a new player, said. She isn’t the only player who is looking forward to the upcoming season as returning and new players alike are eager to begin practices.
