Starbucks’ introduced their new holiday cups; however something looked different this year. Different than years past, this year’s Starbucks’ holiday cup is just plain red. I think that people are making too big of a deal about this cup, and that there are other problems in the world we should be focused on.
This began when a Christian pastor, Joshua Fuerstein was very upset about these cups, and decided to make a video about it. This video now has more than 15 million views, and it’s created a lot of opinions on the matter. Throughout the video the pastor begins to say things like “Starbucks hates Christmas” and Starbucks “are too worried about being politically correct.” However, I couldn’t think these statements are farther than the truth. “The company wants to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories,” Vice President, Jeffrey Fields states. The Vice President of Starbucks also states that “Starbucks tries to create a culture of belonging, inclusion, and diversity.”
In previous years Starbucks would have designs such as ornaments, reindeer and snowflakes on the holiday cup. Some celebrities decide to comment on this debate and make light of it. “The cups used to have snowflakes, elves, Santa’s sleigh, you know everything you find in the bible,” Talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres exclaims. I love this comment because I feel like when there is such an intense debate going on social media, the best thing to do is to use humor to deflect from the controversy . I agree with Ellen because when some Christians are saying that Starbucks’ hates Christmas now, I don’t think they really have ever put any Christmas designs on there in the first place. I think designs like snowflakes and reindeer are more of a “winter” design, not a “Christmas” one.
This debate is blowing over now, and I think it is about time. People need to stop worrying about these cups so much, when there is so many other problems in the world that need to be dealt with. For example, some people can’t even afford Starbucks’ coffee, so why are people complaining about a cup? There are people who won’t be able to afford food for dinner, or even holiday presents for their kids. I think we need to change our focus, and work on the real problems in today’s society. “Why do we care this much about a cup? Mugs are where it’s at anyways,” Singer Demi Lovato comments.
Despite what people are saying that “Starbucks hates Christmas,” they seem to ignore one thing. The cups may have changed, but Starbucks continue to sell Christmas related products. So if you aren’t personally happy with the cups, you can go in and get some Advent Calendars, Christmas tree ornaments, or Christmas coffee blend that they will continue to sell throughout the holiday season.
