On Friday, January 27th, WWT’s Select Choir participated in a musical judging event called Solo and Ensemble. Select Choir is made up of twelve girls who generally represent the best of our school’s choir. Each year, Select Choir performs in front of a judge in order to receive a rating from 1-5 (1 being the best). Select Choir practiced one hour a week for four weeks to prepare for Solo and Ensemble. Despite having such a short time to practice, Select Choir received an “Excellent”, the equivalence of getting a 1.
This year, Select Choir has six new members, which makes up half of the group. The Select Choir is made up of twelve different girls in all grades with a total of three seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. One of the two freshmen in the group is Hannah Pauling 15’. For Hannah, Solo and Ensemble was a new experience. “I was pretty nervous that I would mess up everything for our score, but once we started to sing, I felt confident and got lost in the music,” Hannah said.
This nervousness is to be expected considering the pressure put on these girls. Three Select Choir members are seniors who hoped to get a 1 at their last performance at Solo and Ensemble. “After being so successful last year, it would have been disappointing to not get a 1 my senior year,” Cara Cryderman 12’ said. Since Select Choir got a 1 at Solo and Ensemble, they can now move to states in the spring. With luck and a lot of hard work, Select Choir can again receive a superior rating.
