Serving in the United States military is a high honor, especially if you receive your training at the Naval Academy. In the Academy, men/women train physically and mentally to become a naval officer. The Naval Academy is not cut out for everyone, but it is the perfect fit for Connor Pierce ’13.
Pierce will start his naval career at the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island. This is a one year program that sets up candidates to succeed in the real academy. “You have to have excellent grades, and be in good physical shape for Prep School,” Pierce stated.
Connor met the qualifications to enter straight in to the Naval Academy, but he got caught up in a sticky situation and had to face a dissatisfying obstacle.
To go straight in the Academy, you must get a referral from a senator. These referrals are very difficult to get. And in Connor’s case, it was just too late. The Senator in the district that Connor lives in already referred the maximum amount of candidates to go in to the Academy. In a lot of cases, candidates may ask for a senatorial referral in 11th grade.
In Prep School, Connor will get a taste of what the real Academy will be like. He will be attending the Prep School for one year, then go to Annapolis, Maryland where the Naval Academy is located for 4 years, which is 5 years of education in total. Once he is at the Naval Academy, he will get an education and endure physical and mental challenges.
“I will get a bachelor’s degree in science, and I am undecided on what I will major in,” Pierce said. All candidates receive a bachelor’s degree in science, and then choose what they will major in.
“I am excited. The Academy is a good experience and I look forward to the challenge it offers,” Connor stated.
