Summer 2016 can be defined as the season of new releases from movies to music, however none was more anticipated than the resurgence of a beloved video game. Pokemon Go! It was released as a smartphone app on July 16 of 2016 and within the first few hours of its release social media was abuzz with wild stories and news of the game. As the summer stretched on until the leaves began to change and the first day of school approached though, Pokemon Go may have lost some of its appeal.

“[I was playing] ever since the app came out,” Christian Dolunt ‘17, commented. After claiming he was a huge fan of the franchise as a young kid, it was clear his enjoyment of the game transcended well into today, but he also expressed some drawbacks of the game.

“I got the hang of it after a few weeks, but soon it got redundant,” he explained.

Pokemon Go! was a worldwide hit with die hard fans and new players alike, but as the summer went on the energy of it seemed to fade away little by little until it was nothing but a fun seasonal memory to discuss during back-to-school.

“I traveled a lot so it did not take long to get a hang of the game. [When I was in New York] someone yelled that there was a rare Pokemon nearby and people charged the park.” said Azran Choudhury about his time playing the game early on in the summer, but when asked if he still enjoyed the game like he had, he said it got boring. “It was the same thing over and over.”

This complaint reigns true for most who no longer play the game as it just became too familiar for them and so then loses its appeal. Players opted to wait and see if improvements or new developments would come about, but were disappointed when nothing happened.

“I think if they made it so you could trade that would bring players back,” Christian explained. The idea would be to make it as close to the earlier versions of the game which may help draw previous players back in and even attract new players.

“Maybe even making it easier to evolve characters would make the game more fun,” commented Azran.

Pokemon Go! was a source of summertime fun for many, but now as colder weather closes in on us it seem the game has become nothing more than a summertime fad as some say it will not be as big as before after having its moment so long ago.
