Music is a part of everyone’s life in some way or another, and for one student it is a hobby. Mikey Debrowsky ‘17 has been playing the guitar since he was 11 years old. “I play mainly guitar but I also play bass and I used to know how to play harmonica,” Mikey added. He has been in love with music his whole life and even taught himself how to play.
Music has always been a strong influence in Mikey’s life. “Everything I could get my hands on I would listen to until it broke. My father played guitar and I used to pick his up and mess around and one day I wanted to write my own music,” Mikey said.
While being a talented musician, a great quality to have is being able to write original pieces. “Me and my friend have written notebooks filled with lyrics,” Mikey said. Other than that he has around 10 songs in the process.
Mikey is also a member of a band. The band he is currently in started a year and a half ago but he and his friend have always had little bands and projects since they met each other. “Being part of a band is amazing. It’s like a brotherhood. We all trust and push each other to make us better musicians. Plus we just have fun because we are all doing what we love – playing music,” Mikey said.
Many musicians have an inspiration or someone they look up to as a role model. “My main inspiration is Tom Petty. My whole life I’ve listened to him. He was the master at writing great tunes with good lyrics, strong instrumental pieces, and just amazing rhythms,” Mikey stated.
A career in music is tough to achieve, but not impossible. “It has always been one of my dreams to be able to play my music every day for different people all around the world,” Mikey said. Many people dream big but Mikey wants to just be able to travel around the world with his friends in the band. “I want to change people’s lives with my music,” Mikey added.
