Although JV and Freshmen sports are a big part of Woods- Tower’s student life, they are not recognized often for all of their valiant efforts and abilities as much as their varsity counterparts. However, these teams deserve this recognition. Here’s a quick summary of each of the Fall JV sports season:
JV Football- JV Football had a good season this year. Their 7-2 record was pretty outstanding, as it was many boy’s first years playing on a high school team. They came together as a team and overcame all obstacles that were put in front of them. When asked about his take on the season, Coach Beal stated, “[We are] very happy. We were very pleased with how the season went.”
Players were also very pleased with what they had done and loved getting to know the other players. “My favorite thing about my sport is the bonding with my teammates. This is because we always have fun and mess around during practice, but when it comes to the game we are all serious,” explains Andrew Zannetti ’15. Zannetti plans on continuing in football throughout his high school career. Good job to JV Football, and good luck to them in the future!
JV Soccer- JV Soccer went through a rough season, but they managed to pull through by hard work and dedication. Their record was 3 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie. Though they did not do as well as they hoped to, players feel that their season was entirely worth it and they will continue to love and play the sport.
JV Dance- JV Dance also had an excellent fall season. The girls danced their way into their crowds’ hearts through hard work and dedication to their sport. They are continually getting closer and improving their skills for the future. Amber Bierkamp ’14, is set on going all the way with this sport. “I’m planning on doing full seasons of dance all throughout school. In the next few years, I’m hoping to have my splits all the way, be a stronger dancer, and increase in my flexibility.”
JV Dance has had many performances up to date, including every home football game. However, a fan favorite is their performance at pep rally. “Pep rally was the highlight of the season. Learning the dances was fun [and] the energy was great!” exclaims Lisa Mucha ’15. JV Dance will continue on in the winter season by cheering on the JV Basketball team.
JV Volleyball- Although little is heard about them, the JV Lady Titans made quite a splash this year. They had the perfect 10-0 season, winning the game against Lamphere that even the varsity team couldn’t manage to accomplish. They were consistent and controlled throughout. Though their team was large, they all came together like a family, and rarely was there the type of drama that you can usually find on an all female team. At the end of the season, eight of these excellent players were pulled up to varsity in order to learn further and help the team out at districts. Congrats, JV, on a perfect season. You earned it!
Freshmen Volleyball– Through all the budget cuts, one freshmen team at Woods-Tower was able to be saved, and that was the freshmen volleyball team. Although the team did not have as many games as JV or varsity, they still worked their butts off and ended up 6-1; a near perfect season just like their varsity counterparts. Being on a team your freshman year is a great way to get to know people. For Melissa Shaw ’15, who did not go to Warren Woods Middle School, the volleyball team helped her to get accustomed to life in public school and make new friends. “We became more than a team- we became a family… I’m going to miss everyone so much.”
For now, the freshmen simply wait and dream of one day making it to JV and eventually to their final destination: varsity. Though they know it will be difficult, many of them are ready and willing to push it through to the end. “As I look at the current varsity players, I can see many challenges I will have to face, and I’m ready for them,” declares Hannah Pauling ’15.
