Crazy warm-up drills, a random schedule, and close 2nd family is what you can expect on the girls JV basketball team.

The team’s first game on Friday, November 30th against Royal Oak proved to be the start of a better season.  The team won 32-22.

Last season it didn’t go so well, they went 0-20. As for this season the outcome already looks better.

Friday, December 14th’s first home game against South Lake was another win 48-17. Their record is currently 3-1.

This year’s team features thirteen players including: Asia Jordan, Alexis Shaw, Maddie Gretz, Ashley Fabris, Ashley Harger, Brooke Ballard, Jenna Watson, Lauren Browning, Michelle Westrick, Whitney Loftis, Stefanie Degiovanni, Tiara Johns, and Kenna Kohler.

Asia Jordan ’15 and Alexis Shaw ’14 are helping the team by bringing their talent to the floor.  For Jordan this is her second year but a warm welcome goes to Shaw for just starting.

“If we lost it’s the team as a whole not just an individual,” Jordan and Shaw both agreed.

“We have a lot of good people and it’s about teamwork,” Shaw said.

When Shaw was asked about playing her first game, “Everything was just unusual; it’s my first year. I do know what to expect now though. I decided to join basketball because I always liked it and it’s a new experience,” Shaw continued.

The team works together well. “We have our moments, but it’s out of love to make each other better,” Jordan commented.

“We do get along out of school, were like a 2nd family. This is the chance to meet new people and make new friends,” Jordan and Shaw mentioned.

When Jordan and Shaw were asked about the team as a whole, it’s all about “focus” and “were all in this together,” they said. Also they agreed, “Don’t doubt ourselves.”

Jordan also does track while Shaw plays tennis and softball. “You just have to know how to balance, and try to get your assignments done in class. This is the choice I made,” Jordan said.

Both Shaw and Jordan agreed they want to be JV, at least for the time being. “I still need to know a lot more, I’m not ready yet,” Jordan continued.

Shaw said, “No, not yet I’m not prepared.”

“Basketball is fun and easy, but hard if you don’t like it,” Shaw mentioned.

“The best thing to do is feed off positive energy,” Jordan added.

The JV team is coached by Ron Pupuga. Jordan looks forward to being on the team next year to meet new people once again and the same goes for Shaw. “It’s a lot of fun, a good team, and you learn new things along the way,” Shaw said.

“Practice is every day, but different,” Shaw commented. “Today is 6:15-8:30, then tomorrow its afterschool, it just varies.  My favorite thing is layup drills, but the 3 man weave, it’s just confusing,” Shaw concluded.

If you want to see the girls’ JV basketball team, their next home game will be Thursday, December 20th against Roseville. So far they have the first game under their belts. Good luck for the rest of the season!
