The holiday season; for most, it’s a time for giving and caring, and that’s no exception for several students at Warren Woods Tower. WWT’s HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) has made and will be donating several handmade blankets to local chemo patients and healthcare workers.
“Chapter 3 HOSA members and officers suggested making fleece blankets for patients at Henry Ford Macomb’s infusion center,” says Mrs. Rutkowski, HOSA advisor. According to Rutkowski, the blankets will be personally delivered to patients within the next few weeks. “Amber Bradley and Nina Modelski will deliver the blankets for chemotherapy patients’ comfort measures during their treatment,” Mrs. Rutkowski adds.
According to Rutkowski, the project was the brainchild of two HOSA officers, Amber Bradley ‘14 and Nina Modelski ‘14, both whom have family members affected by cancer. “The topic was sensitive, and it was the perfect opportunity for a community service project,” says Bradley.
“The main idea was to give back to the healthcare community. Nina lost her parents to cancer, and my mom had cancer. I’ve had to get chemo treatments before myself, and I know what it’s like to sit in the infusion center. It’s cold and boring,” Bradley adds.
For these students, making the blankets was the easy part. “Mrs. VanHuysse went out and bought several different types of fabrics with different colors and patterns,” says Bradley. “We just cut them and tied them together.” The difficult part for these students was raising the money necessary to purchase the needed materials. “We did lots of fundraising through several bake sales, sucker sales, and candy grams,” Bradley adds.
Not only will the project bring positive vibes to chemo patients, but there are also lots of positive feelings associated with those behind the project. “It was very rewarding,” Bradley comments. “It’s going to be hard to hand them out, though.”
“I would definitely participate in a similar project in the future,” Bradley adds. “It was very rewarding.”
