The Varsity Boys Basketball team went 11-10 last season, losing Districts in the first round. Overall the boys had great season last year, but with losing 7 seniors, this season may not be as easy. “I believe we have the potential to be very competitive depending on the veteran players, the leadership they show, and how well the younger players adjust to the Varsity level,” says Coach Evola. Incoming Junior player Keegan Sikorski agrees with Coach saying “I feel if we work hard enough with the talent we have, this should be a good season. We just have to focus on our goals.”
For almost everyone on the team, those “goals“ Keegan spoke about, are all on winning Districts and putting their team on the banner. “A championship, and nothing less,” says returning senior varsity player CJ Barnes. The boys and even coach are determined for that District title. Last year their goal was to beat DLS in Districts, but due to last seasons losses, CJ says “our real rivals this year are New Haven and Madison.” With only one loss against Madison and 2 close games with New Haven, they all share the same passion to defeat them.
“Our chemistry and love for each other is stronger this year so we are willing to do more for each other,” CJ says explaining the difference between last years team. “We just have to learn to fight through the tough times and the fun times,” CJ continues. The boys know that this District title wont be easy, but they have been working all fall to prepare. “Working hard this fall in the weight room has helped, and the amount of work they put towards shooting and ball handling should help,” Evola says. “I’m in ankle rehabilitation right now, but I plan to work out more and get in the gym more to prepare myself,” CJ describes. The whole team has individual and group goals that they need to achieve in order to win their main goal as District champions.
Fans shouldn’t be disappointed this year with the team, if everything goes as planned and the boys accomplish all their goals.
