Starting soon this January, the DECA club will be returning to Tower. Thanks to Mrs. Winstanley marketing teacher, DECA will finally be back after being in hiatus since last year.
If you don’t know what DECA is here’s the details:
“DECA is made up of 185,000 members in over 5,000 high schools. It prepares students, leaders, and entrepreneurs, for marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA provides extra-curricular activities that applies classroom lessons to real-life business and community experiences,” Mrs. Winstanley said.
“DECA’s main goal is to encourage leadership while gaining an appreciation for the benefits of service, ethics, and integrity,” Winstanley mentioned.
DECA is able to be held during regular class periods. Students that are interested in competition and enjoy working with other students from different chapters meet one or two times a week. Competitions take place on Saturdays once or twice per year.
Students can benefit from DECA involvement “DECA provides opportunities for leadership and networking with members of other DECA chapters and the community,” Winstanley added.
For some, DECA may look good on a college application. If your school schedule doesn’t exactly work for marketing and this is something you’re really interested in, talk to your counselor or Mrs. Winstanley. Additionally, DECA has a $17 membership fee.
So far DECA has 17 interested students. “Students were not prepared to make the commitment that is required to participate in extracurricular actives and competition,” Winstanley said. This is why DECA was on hiatus last year.
Ms. Winstanley isn’t doing DECA just because no one else will. “I believe very strongly in the leadership potential of my students and I know that DECA provides a framework for us to work with. I would like to have two successful projects and to grow membership for the next school year,” Winstanley concluded.
So if you have an open hour, are in a marketing class, or even interested talk to Mrs. Winstanley in Room 121. DECA could be a great opportunity.
