….How does Marvel keep doing this?! I’m literally shocked that a movie studio, a movie studio owned by Disney no less, is allowed to take powerful and interesting risks that almost always pay off and make the film universe all the more interesting and in depth. Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier is the greatest thing to come from the second wave of Marvel films, and if I was daring, I’d call it the best film to come out of Marvel Studios yet.
Taking place after The Avengers, we see Steve Rogers, Captain America, played by Chris Evans, working to adapt to the 21st century after being reawakened from what must have seemed like death while he was frozen. He’s having trouble finding his way to fit within the more morally gray and espionage based world of modern military, used to the more easy to understand conflicts that he fought over in the second World War, especially once he learns of SHEILD’s plan to make a crew of militarized giant aircrafts to take security measures and keep peace, which plays to Cap like an Orwellian situation. However, the film takes a larger cue from Clancy than from Orwell, as the Captain begins to uncover a massive government conspiracy involving the terrorist organization HYDRA, and he and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow must work to save the whole world while not knowing if there’s anyone who they can truly trust. The story is a risky, interesting, and broad tale, and works as a piece of very strong and compelling drama. Its as human and grounded as Iron Man 3, but fits perfectly into the series of films that Marvel has presented.
At this point, there’s not much to say about the technicals of a Marvel movie. All the actors are great, all the effects are great, and the music and direction look great. There’s honestly not much outside of that that I can say, because the production values were always going to be great on account of how much money these movies make for the studio.
Its strange, because while this may be my favorite of the Marvel films, I don’t have particularly much to say about it that wouldn’t involve major, major spoilers for the film. I loved pretty much every second of it, and I can’t think of anything I had any particular issue with the film. This is gonna be one of my favorite movies of the year more than likely, and it leaves me very excited for what Marvel does next.
Final Rank: A+
+Another strong Marvel film that takes many risks and pushes the film series to its limits
-Leaves me little to say that won’t spoil things immensely.
