School getting you down? Homework and projects piling up? Teachers and coaches stressing you out? Warren Woods Tower now offers a way to dispel all of those feelings with a furry fix! A new animal-assisted therapy program has arrived at WWT to help all students manage anxiety, stress, anger, and sadness they may be experiencing.
In OT/416, down the food’s hallway, resides a 3 month old bunny named Ruby who is here to give you a pick-me-up whenever you need it. Students are welcomed and encouraged to stop by to visit Ruby throughout the day when they are feeling blue. Students can brush and comb Ruby, feed her hand-made treats, and sit with her in her play pen as a way to manage any feelings of anxiety or stress.
“She loves cuddling, and daily strolls on a rolling cart in a laundry basket to check our mail and greet students in the hallway,” says Mrs. Morgan, Occupational Therapist for WWT.
Ruby is here to help them jump start the animal assisted therapy program here at WWT as animal assisted therapy could be wonderful resource for the students of WWT. Therapeutic interaction with animals has been found to be an effective method to reduce anxiety and feelings of depression, loneliness, and isolation.
“Our hope is that Ruby can lift spirits and provide comfort to anyone who needs a little pick me up to get through the day,” Mrs. Morgan explained. Not only will Ruby help students, but Mrs. Morgan as well, as she says Ruby has helped her develop creative and fun interventions for their therapy sessions.
