Beyond the Lights is a story about Noni, a young superstar in the music world. The pressures of being in the public eye have her on the edge until she meets Kaz Nicol, a police officer and politician who has been assigned to her detail. The two are drawn to each other despite the outside influences thinking they should not be together. In the end, it was Kaz’s love that gave Noni the courage to be herself and break free to become the artist she wanted to be and not what people expected her to be.
The movie was great and not only a classic love story relating to the well-known play Romeo and Juliet, but also a story of a girl trying to figure out who she is and get the courage to share her true self with everyone around her. Noni is a very talented character and because everyone told her who she had to be it put her on the edge, making her think about ending her own life.
The trailer for Beyond the Lights caught people’s eye the most. “When I saw the trailer it looked interesting,” Jessica Golembiewski ’17 said. It gave a short insight to what would happen in the movie by showing some dramatic events but was also very brief, leaving the viewer wanting more.
One of my favorite scenes was when Noni and Kaz were up on the balcony, and how you could see the love in their eyes. Another scene I enjoyed was at the end of the movie when Noni finally found the courage to sing what came from her heart. This is easily relatable because your whole entire life, people will tell you to be the best you that you can be; meaning that you should not change yourself based on your environment and just be yourself.
Being in high school, the struggles Noni goes through are very relatable. High School is all about finding your voice and having courage to go after what you want in life. Going to see this movie would give viewers strength and courage to come out of what is expected of them and show off who they really are as a person.
Beyond the Lights is truly a great movie, setting a good example for teenagers as they try to find their way in the world. “I really liked the movie,” Andrew Badro ’17 said. I would definitely recommend going to see this movie.
