Sophomore Chaise Mayer rocketed on to the wrestling season, last season ultimately winning second place in state finals up at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Wrestling at 103 pounds and having a record of forty-four to six, Mayer rarely lost to kids in his own weight class. Chaise has been wrestling since he was four years old, he got into wrestling because of his father who was a wrestler and his uncle who started the love for wrestling in the family. They all have successful backgrounds and “It is expected for me to be good,” Mayer said.

Every wrestler has a weight class and in order to stay in that weight class they must have a diet, train hard, and a good work ethic. Mayer’s diet is very healthy; he tries to stay away from anything that’s not water, eats mostly greens, sometimes fruit but fruit is extremely heavy, and stays away from red meats and anything that is fried. Chaise sometimes drinks Gatorade but very rarely. He does not drink pop. Mayer is making a change though, his weight class will no longer be 103 pounds, he will be moving up to 112 pounds. His training is very long, tiring, and it’s a grind.  “I don’t think anyone works harder then me. I am always the fastest person on the mat,” Mayer said.

Mayer is very dedicated to wrestling, he has done this his whole life and it means everything to him. Mayer has put a lot of time into this sport. Chaise puts in about three hours at practice a day and about an hour at home. He practices five days a week and, on top of that, he usually has a tournament on the weekend. Chaise usually does drills, lifts, and a lot of conditioning. His views are that if he puts in more work then the person next to him, that they cannot beat him.

In the off season, Chaise does not wrestle for a competitive club but still practices with teammates, he tries to find open rooms or a gym. Mayer usually would go with Elijuh Weaver, who is a team mate of Chaises. Chaise and Elijuh are extremely close. “Everyone on my team is my brother, we’re all a family. Chaise is good. One day he will be great. He has a lot of potential in him,” Weaver said.

For the future season, he hopes t

Chaise hopes to do well this season and feels that if the team puts in one-hundred percent, they can and will beat anyone.  “I want to win a team state title and an individual state championship,” Mayer stated.

Last season, Mayer won five titles, The Macomb County Champion, Clash of Champion, Mac Red Champion, District Champions, Regional Champion, and was a State Finalist. Mayer also was the runner up at state finals. “It was a disappointment to come up short as a team and to finish second as an individual,” Mayer said. He hopes to go to states this year and win the title as an individual and a team.

Mayer does not have a motto or anything he goes by. He makes a lot of sacrifices though, wrestling take up a lot of time. Chaise does not get to go and hang out when ever he would like with his friends, he has to go to bed by a certain time to get enough rest, and is unable to do a lot of activities kids now a days do.  He sets many goals and completes them by picking something he truly wants. He works hard day in and day out and sacrifices as much as he can to achieve.

Chaise did not come to success by himself. He has many of friends and family that have his back and help him out. Mayer’s mom, dad, brother and friends have been there but his biggest supporter is his coach, who is not only his coach but his uncle too. “Chaise is very talented but not for talent sake, he works extremely hard… I have seen him running to the school before tournament at six in the morning, while others are pulling up in their cars and wiping the sleep out of their eyes, he is working. Its things like that, that show confidence, commitment, and prepare you physically and mentally for the stage. He is good because he has worked to be good, his successes are his and has nothing to do with his last name,” Coach Mayer stated. Coach Mayer has been pushing Chaise since he was young and giving him the right advice to guide him down the right path.
