With times changing, we’re seeing more and more technology upgrades everywhere. Our school is no different. One of the most significant changes is in the library. Many students probably remember the days in elementary school where each class had a certain time of the week designated “library time.” During this time, everyone would check out a book and read for an hour or so. Even in middle school, the library was used primarily as a source for books. However, in Tower, the focus in our library is chiefly on the computers, not the books. This poses an issue for many students who like to read or need books for research projects.
Students who like reading are at a loss at our school library since many of them don’t even know how to check out books. The trick is to go to the library between 8:30 and 12:30, which is when Mrs. Leinhase is still here. Mrs. Leinhase is the library aide and can answer any questions related to the library or how to check out books. She is especially an important resource since students will likely have to write at least one research essay that requires book sources.
Other changes have also recently been made in the library, some more obvious than others. One thing that likely escapes the notice of most students is the addition of many more books this year. Our school is involved in a program that ships our library a certain selection of fiction books every so often. So far, Tower has received two shipments of said books.
Other additions to the library have been made to help make it feel cozier. The internet-café-looking tables and chairs are one such addition. These were added to give students a more comfortable place to study. Also, it’s impossible to miss the brightly colored art pieces mounted on the wall above these tables.
Despite all these positive changes in the library, there have also been a few unfortunate ones as well. Many of you have likely heard that there has been over thirty thousand dollars worth of damage done to our schools computers since this year began. Much of this damage has been done to the library computers. This is the reason for the stricter rules when it comes to computer use.
With all the technology upgrades in our school, it’s easy to forget that we are privileged to have computers and such a variety of books. Next time you are in the library, try to treat both respectfully.
