Students from all across the Macomb District were recently invited to participate in a Diversity Summit in Shelby Township. From the population of students at Warren Woods Tower, Mr. Mackenzie, WWT Principal, hand picked 5 students to be part of this enlightening experience. The students that went were picked because they showcased a certain leadership skill and they are the type of people Mr. Mackenzie thinks will make a difference in the school. The goal of the Summit is to produce positive understandings about diversity, bullying, religions, and different cultures by splitting up the kids into groups with other kids from different schools.

One student who had the chance to attend the Summit was Jazmine Miller, ‘17. Jazmine explained how the Summit consisted of the kids talking in their groups about these different topics, like bullying for example.

“We split up into groups with people we didn’t know, from other schools around Macomb, and we talked about bullying. We talked about understanding the causes and figuring out solutions to stop it from happening.” said Jazmine, ’17.

The groups did more than just talking though. The array of activities planned for the students to partake in included a game of Kahoot and the group even put their spin on the infamous Mannequin Challenge!

Coming back from the Summit, Mr. Mackenzie included the group in a big decision happening in the school soon. The idea of a Unity Club came about. As of right now there is no set in stone date on when the club will start, but it is projected to be available to students in late December or early January.  The idea of the club is centered around helping boost the confidence of students and making their day better.

“[The Club] is all about helping people become more understanding and accepting of others,” explained Aaliyah Carbone, ‘18.

Mr. Mackenzie and the Summit group want to bring the key points of the Diversity Summit to WWT to help make the school a friendly, positive environment for students and they hope many students will join them!
